CHIANG MAI'S

PROGRESS

UPON IT'S JOURNEY TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

Chiang Mai Nayu is focused upon four key dimensions of sustainability, namely Nature, Economy, Society and Wellbeing. Through an on-going public consultation with the local community which began in 2018, the public defined what were the key “sustainability indicators” that needed attention for Chiang Mai to become Nayu and sustainable. These four dimensions bring people together around a common set of values, understanding and a shared vision of what sustainability would look like in Chiang Mai.

To monitor the cities progress, Chiang Mai Nayu has a crucial role within the community to present the “trend data” (data from previous years) available related to each of the five sustainability indicators within each dimension. Part of the mission is to inform organizations, businesses, and residents of the current situation with regards to Nature, Economy, Society and Wellbeing in Chiang Mai and how Chiang Mai is progressing within each indicator. Ultimately contributing to the transformation of Chiang Mai to become a living role model of a healthy and sustainable city in South East Asia. The initial focus is upon the city and district of Chiang Mai.

What Do We Mean By Sustainability?

Sustainability is the ability of a system to continue indefinitely. To do this implies that the system conditions are optimal for the system to function and achieve its purpose. For Chiang Mai Nayu, the system conditions for long-term sustainability of our city are framed by the four dimensions of Sustainability: Nature, Economy, Society and Well-Being. Sustainability for our city is when these four system conditions interact together in a balanced and harmonious way. Therefore, creating a sustainable city means preserving some things we currently have… and changing others. It means restoring and preserving ecosystems that support animals, plants and people in a dynamic continuum of life. It means paying attention to the mistakes made in regards to land/water use, transportation and urban planning, so we do not face a future dominated by unmanageable urban sprawl and superhighways. It means increasing the equity of access and opportunity in our city, so everyone can enjoy the benefits of the dynamic and desirable city we are building. It means attracting new “circular economy” businesses and updating systems and technologies, so that we create new local jobs while avoiding pollution or environmental damage. And it means prioritizing the wellness and happiness of its people to live flourishing lives.
